What to know before you start a business in Mexico

Before you start a business in Mexico, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

The workforce: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 20% of new businesses fail during the first two years of being open, 45% during the first five years, and 65% during the first 10 years. Only 25% of new businesses make it to 15 years or more. If you want to be among that 25%, rigorous training and certifications are the way to go.

The competition: In many industries, starting a business is a step down from running a full-fledged business. In those cases, you might be in for a surprise as competition starts  hard  and bolts.

The issues: Regulations in Mexico are similar to those in the U.S., with some variations. For example, business owners should note that non-citizens are not eligible to open businesses in Mexico, and must operate under the supervision of a Mexican citizen.

The traditional business: If you plan to operate a business with a traditional business structure, i.e., one that includes a full-time boss, you should consider whether that type of business is viable in your market. Although there are some exceptions, generally speaking, the U.S. has more barriers to entry for starting a business than Mexico does.

TheKeys to Starting a Business in Mexico Missouri CPAs

Forming an LLC is the preferred way to start a business in Mexico. According to the Association of Certified Stateelsh,’ll only 25% of new businesses choose to operate as corporations’. By forming an LLC, you can protect your privacy and civil rights, while reducing your tax obligations  — if you choose to sell your business, you’ll receive a tax bill from the Mexico Missouri CPAs, and if you keep it, you’ll have to pay income tax on profits.

The important thing is to create a business structure that allows you to operate in the most efficient way possible. According to Best Small Business Tips, LLCs “operate like a regular business with one key difference: The people who run it aren’t personally responsible for the debts and obligations the business incurs.” This means that you can avoid the risk of personally securing loans in order to start your business. It also means you can off-load some of your liability if your business qualifies for an operating loss.

Although many entrepreneurs prefer to start their businesses in LLCs, there are alternatives. For example, startup founder John Catsimanche decided to start his company in a corporation. Before doing so, he researched various structure options and found that LLCs are not widely available in all  states. Even where they are, approval can take months. In the end, he chose to start his business in a corporation because it offered the best opportunity for quick success.

Most forms of business startup require an investment of money in either equipment or inventory. Inventory can be anything from partially completed products to tools and supplies. The key is to find something that you enjoy and that you can turn into a moneymaker.
